Winger – Better Days Comin’ [2014]

Winger have always been a band you can rely on for quality musicianship and Better Days Comin’ is their excellent new album that shows they still have a lot to offer fans of melodic rock. The album is produced, engineered, and mixed by band leader Kip Winger who has always produced high quality albums throughout his career. The sound is huge with lots of killer riffs and musical passages forming the basis for his strong and emotional vocals to cut through.

Reb Beach and John Roth absolutely nail the guitar riffs and solos and Rod Morgenstein puts in another great drumming performance that brings life to each song. Highlights include the hard hitting opening track “Midnight Driver Of A Love Machine”, the stunning riffs and keyboard textures of “Queen Babylon”, the progressive sounding rock of “Tin Soldiers”, the existential sentiment of “Ever Wonder”, the signature Winger rock groove of “Storm In Me”, and the epic closing track “Out Of This World” that weaves a darkly building atmosphere leading to a huge guitar solo.

The deluxe edition comes with the essential bonus track “Another Beautiful Day” and a making of the album short film along with film clips for “Rat Race” and “Better Days Comin'”. Despite the fact that Better Days Comin’ doesn’t quite hit the brilliant heights of their previous album Karma, Winger have given fans a strong album that delivers everything you love about this highly musical group of rock survivors. Definitely one of the best albums of the year so far.
