Vollmer – When Pigs Fly [2016]

vollmer-2016This was Brian Vollmer’s solo album written with Rob Long, Tony Paleschi, and Bill Gadd, he’s first studio album since Helix’s 1993 release It’s a Business Doing Pleasure. Together they had a weekend cover band called 7 Year Itch which played throughout Southern Ontario. Originally this record was started as somewhat of a joke, but when the songs started to take shape and everyone could hear how good they were, it became a serious project.

Several of the songs ended up on other Helix albums. “I’m a Live Frankenstein” later released in remixed and overdubbed form on the Helix album Never Trust Anyone Over 30. “King of the Hill” and “Stumblin’ Blind” were later released in remixed and overdubbed forms on the Helix CD Rockin’ in My Outer Space, while “Good Times Don’t Get Better Than This” was later used as end credit music on the Helix DVD 30 Years of Helix.

The far-from-subtle nine song set opens with the big beat of ” I’m A Live Frankenstein “, a great stomper of a song, with Vollmer’s voice in obvious fine form, which is chased by the rowdy ” Life Of The Party (But Now He’s Dead!!) “.The low rumblin’ “King Of The Hill” is an 80s rockin’ anthem with amazing bass line while Vollmer’s vocals this time are too dry and up front showing too many of his flaws as a singer, followed by the power ballad “Stumblin’ Blind” a slow orchestrated cut that can been hit on any Helix albums. The piston poundin’ ” Pissed Off ” is rolled out with road-head in a hot rod action that rocks behind a growlin’ guitar riff and Vollmer’s on-the-rebound lyrics. “X-Ray Eyes” is a heavy riff piece with a catchy chorus slips into raunchy fantasy land before the boys get back to reality on the amped-up title track and the straight-shootin’, short shot of ” When Pigs Fly “. The acoustic ballad “Good Times Don’t Get Better Than This” closing the album and being a nice addition into this collection of songs.

The mixing on the album sounds really good, it’s not overly tweaked to where the highs hurt your ears. Re-released by Perris Records in limited 500 copies it a masterpiece that worth a place into your collectio especially if you are fan of Helix work.
