Paul Smith – No Frills [1987]

Paul Smith, a Christian singer from the USA – released several albums in the 80’s and 90’s. “No Frills” is his release from 1986 and it contains amazing AOR with some Hi-tech influences, a great vocal performance, excellent musicianship and a breathtaking and crystal clear sound!

There are 9 songs in total, with some killers among them. “Faithful” opens the album with great arrangements and a catchy chorus that reminds of Michael Omartian meets Tim Feehan. It gets even better with the following track, with bombastic keys, great guitars and a super catchy hookline “Danciong To Close” is an absolute killer in the vein of Bill Baumgart meets Ron Collins and Clif Magness. The heartfelt ballad starts slowly and silent, but leads to a fantastic and breath taking guitar solo from Tom Hemby, while “The Right Thing” has again some cool Hi-tech influences on offer and sounds like Bryan Duncan, Chris Eaton and Chris Irvine did a song together… By the way: Paul Smith has a great voice, that reminds of Bryan Duncan, Clif Magness and Tim Feehan. With “Something Better” there’s the next killer tune, that offers a full blown chorus even White Heartcouldn’t do better!

Well, to make it short: “No Frills” is one of the best Christian AOR releases you may found. The songs, the production, the musicianship – almost everything seems to be perfect here!
