Mr. Big – Get Over It [1999]

Get Over It released in 1999 was the fifth studio album from hard rockers Mr Big and the first to feature new guitarist Richie Kotzen. Produced by Pat Regan, the album is mixed nicely with an organic feel and great performances from all band members. There is certainly a different vibe to the album without Paul Gilbert but it still works. The sound is significantly more pop orientated in the vein of Eric Martin’s solo albums along with a soul feel brought to the fore by Kotzen’s influence.

Highlights include the funky guitar riffs of “Static” which also features dual vocals by Kotzen and Martin, the syncopated groove of “Hiding Place” which has a grungy Kings X feel to it, the excellent acoustic ballad “Superfantastic” that really allows Eric Martin to shine, the strong melodic chorus of “How Does It Feel”, and the dreamy closing ballad “My New Religion”. The Japanese reissue also includes the bonus track “Water Over The Bridge” which is a bluesy number with another catchy chorus.

Overall Get Over It represents a stylistic change for Mr Big whilst still including many of the elements that define a Mr Big album. Whilst it might not feature the hard rocking songs and virtuoso guitar solos that earlier albums showcased, Get Over It is still a quality offering that represents essential listening for fans of Mr Big and Richie Kotzen.
