Michael Thompson Band – Future Past [2012]

“Future past” is the second, brand new album by the “Michael Thompson” band, released by “Frontiers Records”. Over twenty years past their debut “How Long”, sought after session guitarist Michael Thompson has reinvented his own AOR project subsequently delivering old school fm rock with an undeniable west-coast feeling.

The line up features lead singer Larry King, bassist Alan Berliant, drummer Khari Parker and Thompson on guitars and keyboards. Despite its subtle-melodic nature, “Future Past” bares various mood swings throughout its 11-song track list; a more thorough play reveals that the song structures that put together these tracks are far from straightforward or simplistic-there are various twists and turns to be found within the rhythm patterns as well as changes in the key of the song. Clearly you can expect a similar songwriting approach as found on Jimi Jamison’s latest solo album “Crossroads Moments”-obviously Thompson leans towards westcoast soft rock which results in entirely different output, yet the approach/mentality in crafting songs is very similar.

Clearly the protagonist element on “Future Past” are the vocals, and Thompson has wisely chosen to accompany the vocal lines/melodies rather than directing them with his own playing. “High Times”, “Future Past”, “Beautiful Mystery” and “End Game” are some of the highlights found on this second effort of MTB. Overall if you are a fan of `80s oriented west-coast adult oriented rock but enjoy the challenge of inventive songwriting, “Future Past” is an ideal proposition.
