Kaisas – Martyria [2019]

Five years past since the band’s last album “Degitalize” and the Greek hard n’ heavy act Kaisas re-emerge with “Martyria” released through Sleaszy Rider Records. Kaisas draws strongly towards 80s Euro heavy-metal, undertaking an old-school-as-it-gets approach to their music though insisting on clean and clear production which is absolutely essential for any album of this kind. The band consists of guitarist/bassist Babis Kaisas among with Greek drummer Fotis Nestor Canister and Scottish singer Gordon McKintosh while special guests include, British Alan Kelly (SHY/7HY) on vocals, German Kenny Behnke – Gapp on seductive female appearance and Producer Strutter (W.A.N.T.E.D./Gus G) on keyboards.

In good Kaisas tradition, “Martyria” features thirteen stretched, technically overloaded songs upon which the band uncover their technical/artistic abilities to the greatest extent, make it a clearly superior to its predecessor in songwriting, performance and perhaps production. Here we have to mention that the song “Steamin’” is the first official lyric video in memory of Def Leppard guitarist Steve Clark.

“Martyria” turned out to be the heaviest work of Kaisas’ up until that time, the guitar parts have been substantially increased, while the riffs have become more complicated and the instrumental passages more extensive. The new singer proves himself an excellent choice for the band putting a rather passionate performance, making use of his full range-at times, but still one has to comment that choruses are not as large as on the previous album. Having said that, despite the instrumental progressions throughout the album, Babis manages to steal the show once again, effectively delivering empathy, aggression and drama into Kaisas progressive mixture.

Overall Kaisas’ “Martyria” is a rather fresh offering in the genre, evidently prioritizing great songwriting and performances over originality. If you are a fan of hard n’ heavy tunes you will definitely not be disappointed by this purchase.
