Dusko Milovic – Cross my Heart [1991]

Dusko Milovic is a singer, born in Croatia, who lived or still lives in Denmark and as far as I heard he is now working as a teacher. In 1991 he released his only album at a small indie label in very very limited quantities. Musically Dusko Milovic persents perfect AOR with a good mix of guitars and keyboards (some Danish session musicans are involved in the making of this album), great choruses and hooklines and a pretty good sound for such an indie release with a small budget. Most of the songs here are in English, a few are also sung in Croatian.

The opener “88 Miles Away” shows you what this record is about: it’s a cool uptempo AOR song with some horn sections in between and great guitars and also a super catchy refrain. Especially the rough voice of Dusko but also the great chorus reminds of a blend of Stan Bush and Jim Jamison. After the smooth and very melodic “Risan”, that sounds like a Guido Mineo song, he continues with another sing along tune: the titletrack has some cool keyboard arrangements and reminds a bit of Tim Feehan meets Chris Irvine. “Ti I Ja” comes along with another memorable refrain, while “Sun Street” features some cool and mood-lifting Hi-tech elements and again brings Tim Feehan to my mind.

My second favorite (besides the cool opener) is the full blown “1987” that closes the album with mighty guitar riffs and a powerful sound and sounds like it is a leftover of Stan Bush’s session to his legendary “Barrage”-album, or it also sounds a bit like Robert Tepper… It’s a shame that this guy never released a second album somewhere (maybe hi did but we didn’t know it? ;-)…

I guess it’s time to give his album “Cross My Heart” the attention it deserves. If you are into quality indie AOR, with good lead vocals and musicianship and catchy songs all over it would be a good addition to any top collection out there.
