Alchemy – Dyadic [2019]

“Dyadic” is the second, brand new album by Italian melodic hard rock band Alchemy. Having caused quite a stir in the hard rock scene with their debut, the group has returned with an even more accomplished second album. The lineup features lead singer Marcello Spera, guitarist Cristiano Stefana, key player Andrew Trabelsi, bassist Matteo Castelli and Matteo Severini on drum duties.

As before the band puts forward their brand of 80s influenced melodic hard rock with flamboyant guitar licks, classic keyboard melodies, impeccable lead vocals moving effortlessly from AOR to melodic hard rock while the rhythm section is mostly supportive of the vocals and guitars. What perhaps may come as a minor surprise is that despite hailing from Italy, Alchemy do not quite follow the melodic rock approach of contemporary Italian bands of the genre such as Edge of Forever, Wheels of fire and Shining Line. Instead Alchemy have come closer to the sound of the US school of melodic hard rock.

Moreover, great contributions have been provided in the album by renowned artists: James Martin, Tom Martin & Nick Workman (Vega) penned together the exclusive unreleased track “Hero”, while the likes of Davide “Dave Rox” Barbieri, Stefano Zeni and Steve De Biasi (Gunshy, Room Experience, Charming Grace) appear in “Dyadic” as very special guests. On a personal level, it took only one song to be totally impressed by their collective talent, that was “Endless Quest” a dramatic and honest mega melodic hard rock track with such an engaging lyrical theme. And as expected that was not the only standout track on the album, in fact “Cursed”, “One Step Away”, “Hero” plus “Take Another Shot”, are all magnificent melodic hard rockers.

I would say that the album’s greatest advantage as a melodic hard rock release, is its emphasis on both groove and melody, while the stylish, vocal performance does not prevent the songs from including large and memorable choruses. If you like hard rock melodies and choruses played with the heaviness and distortion of classic hard rock then “Dyadic” is a must…
