99 Crimes – 99 Crimes [2019]

99 Crimes is the self-titled debut album by American hard rock band 99 Crimes that will be released in the early April of this year by Perris Records. The group is built around Paul Lidel of Dangerous Toys, Dirty Looks and Broken Teeth fame on lead vocals and guitars among Chris Jordan (M!ss Crazy) behind the drum kit and Jeff Lynn on bass guitar and backup vocals.

The album is proven consistent in both direction and performance, Lidel is clearly an experienced voice in 80s and 90s hard rock scene, blending technical vibrato-based vocals with stylish backing vocals, while his contribution is indispensable in generating the party rock atmosphere. In addition, Jordan’s drumming stands out, bringing to front a huge beat complemented by devastating tom sound. Lynn definitely plays his part as the bassist of the band and is just as technically accomplished as the other members, who also featured on lead vocals for the song “Avenue”.

In terms of production one is glad to find out that the drums are granted a rather thick and sustained sound while the guitars are loud but overproduced at parts, losing a good amount of their attack while one also expected more lead guitar parts and solos. Finally, the vocals are thankfully all-clean and substantially melodic, a definite plus for the album.

Those who favor hard rock and glam/hair metal will probably be more attracted to songs like the opener “Devil in your Dreams”, “Fool”, “Crystal Ball” and “Nine Poud Hammer”. An album that will probably satisfy to the fullest fans of Dangerous Toys, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Dirty Looks and Broken Teeth.
