Profile Dave Kelly and Derek Jeffery met and formed a band in Cambridge England in 1968. The following year they entered a “Battle of the Bands” Nationwide contest organized by Peter Asher who was heading up the Beatles new Record Label in London. To their utter amazement, Dave and Derek won the contest, and the prize was a recording contract with Apple. Unfortunately for them, the Beatles were just about to break up as a band, but they were still able to learn a lot about songwriting and recording and-much more importantly for them at the time-get invited to private parties where the Beatles were in attendance, as well as Mick Jagger’s wedding to Bianca Jagger in the south of France.
After the Beatles broke up Peter Asher left London for Los Angeles-where he became the manager and producer for James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. Through a recommendation from two people-the Beatles roadie Mal Evans and Jackson Browne and Terry Reid’s slide guitarist David Lindley Warner Brothers Records signed Dave and Derek to a Recording Contract. For two years they toured the UK and Europe as the opening act for such major UK acts as Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELO, The Who, Mott the Hoople, King Crimson, Spooky Tooth, the Strawbs and Jethro Tull, to name just a few. They even played at a festival featuring Jimmy Hendrix as the headliner.
Producer and guitarist Al Perkins lead the band that also featured Dave Kelly (also on this list) through a collection a 10 songs influenced by The Byrds, Beatles, Crosby Stills & Nash and The Rolling Stones. Every song is very memorable and destined for radio, but with no support the album ended up destined for cut out bins.
