“Against the grain” it the brand new, 3rd album by seasoned British AOR band “After Hours”; Having formed in the 1987, subsequently releasing two albums, the group broke up in the early 90s with their second self-titled album being released in 1992. Almost twenty years past that time, “After Hours” have reformed and released their new album “Against the grain”.

The line up features founding members lead singer John Francis, lead guitarist Tim Payne and bassist Martin Walls along with new entries drummer Chris Pope and key-player Sean Mcmenemy. The “After Hours” album is nothing of an extravagant musical venture; the production never exaggerates with drums, bass and guitars coming out as natural as possible while expectedly emphasis is placed on the instrumental melodies and harmony vocals, being the elements that “After Hours” wish to bring to front. “Against the grain” is a rather mature album even by AOR album including occasional acoustic touches and a more ethnic feeling taking which make “Against the Grain” rather atmospheric at parts.

Although the album is expectedly not favouring forceful performance, it is the more up tempo and electric songs on “Against the Grain” that are perhaps the most memorable. Tracks like the opening “Stand up”, “Angel” “Turn up your radio” and “Let it go” are accomplished melodic rockers with substantial radio potential. Overall “After Hours-Against the grain” is a very good comeback for the British melodic rockers although perhaps fewer acoustic parts would have served the release to a greater extent.
