PROFILE

“The Awakening” is the first and only studio album to date by American glam metal/melodic rock band “Voodoo X”, originally released in 1989. “Voodoo X’ was formed around then up-and-coming solo artist, singer Jean Beavoir who had already established himself in the melodic scene through a series of solo albums. Beyond Jean the line up features guitarist Tommy Lafferty, bassist Ivan Wong, drummer Luecke Lake and keyboardist Jorn Uwe Petersen.

Though clearly the protagonist on “The Awakening” is Jean, the album features its fair share of thick guitar riffs and melodic lines; equally important is the role of the keyboards setting the mood on the more melodic songs, also complementing the leading instruments through a variety of harmonies. Finally the rhythm section proves far from stereotypical handing everything from standard, to mid tempos even the occasional double bass drum attack on the fastest songs of “Voodoo X”.

The album opens on the up-tempo melodic hard rocker “I’m on fire” followed by the melodic potential hit “A lover like you”, the groovy “Don’t bother me”. From there onwards “The awakening” takes a considerable turn towards AOR with the “Into the night”, “What can I do” and “Have enough” are perfect examples of the melodic magic “Voodoo X” were capable of.

If you are a fan of Jean Beavoir or his later band “Crown of Thorns” and overall enjoy a mix of `80s rock whether that being AOR, melodic hard rock or Glam Metal, then “Voodoo X” is for you.
