PROFILE

“State of rock” is the collaboration of “Frontline” members Robby Bodel (g), Hutch Bauer (b) and Rami Ali (d) with British singer Tony Mills (“Shy”,”TNT”). From their conception in the early 90s “Frontline” were one of the few bands that managed to blend in perfect balance 80s AOR with Hard Rock while finding appropriate markets to sell (namely Japan). This new band/collaboration is named after the title of the first “Frontline” album, “State of Rock”, by all means a very appropriate if not needed release as the last “Frontline” album dates back in 2006.

“State of Rock” has the “Frontline” trademark all over it so you can expect lengthy harmonics, thick guitars, thumping bass from a release that is built on melody. At the same time choosing Mills as their singer was a wise decision as his vocal style is very similar to that of original “Frontline” singer Stephan Kämmerer.

So is this as good as “Frontline”? Well truth be told, “State of Rock” might sound rather typical on first play and will probably require the listener’s full attention in order to perfectly appreciate this release. On that count, the more time you invest on this album, the better it sounds! Having played the album through over four times, I have to say I am very satisfied with the material on offer; still as those familiar with the band will remember, with “Frontline” you were hooked on their songs immediately as they demonstrated that intensity and mature aggression which unfortunately is not to be found on this album.

Needless to say, all songs here are up to standards, including standouts “Black & Blue”, “Heartless Dreamer”, the titanic “Hanging in the Balance” plus the super melodic “Without my love”. “State of Rock” does justice to the “Frontline” heritage; it might not have you tearing the walls with excitement; but it will give you the best blend of AOR with Hard Rock through its 10 tracks.
