Syre – Pissed To The Gills [2017]

Originally from Canada, Syre was one of those groups that were drowned in the mass when they appeared at the start of the 90s. Originally they formed in 1986, by members from Toronto, London and Kitchener they brought their unique brand of glam to the Canadian scene and through non-stop touring 50 weeks a year, built a strong live following of dedicated supporters.

On the musical level, it can be considered that Syre made a mixture of hard rock n’ roll and hard FM / A.O.R. There are even some commonalities with Poison period “Flesh & blood”. “Pissed to the Girls” is the band’s second album repackaged and remastered with new cover art work from Demon Doll Records followed the debut “It Ain’t Pretty Being Easy” that also re-release a year later.

On this second release the band move to more melodic rock paths with a sound built on a mixture of distorted and acoustic guitars, well crated guitar melodies/leads, robust rhythm section (where the bass often takes a leading role within song structures) and distinctly melodic lead vocals courtesy of Doug Weir.

This second album’s greatest advantage is the fact that all instruments develop into significant parts of “Syre” sound with Rick Mead uncovering a great deal of his guitar playing through his characteristic melodies and trademark riffs, in addition the drumming is far thicker than what one would have anticipated featuring plenty of toms. “Pissed to the Girls” features such flashy 80s-oriented melodic rockers as “Fight Fire with Fire”, “Need What U Find” and “Comin’ Around”. The overall production is very well rounded thanks to Jim Huff from Wall of Silence, bringing to front an extra polished rock album without however undermining the intensity of the vocal and instrumental melodies.

Overall “Pissed to the Girls” is another quality propositions for fans of melodic hard rock. Syre just simply delivers infectious 80s Rock time in and time out. If you never had the change to heard non of their albums or never find them now is your change to get them. Worthly to be mentioned that the band still has all original members and continues doing live dates in 2017…
