Streets – Crimes In Mind [1985]

STREETS_CIM

STREETS has to be one of the most talented bands ever formed. In 1985 they released their second album under the name “Crimes In Mind”, an absolute masterpiece of AOR highly recommended to all the fans of melodic rock.

The band formed in 1981 from Steve Walsh (Kansas, Seventh Key, Khymera) on vocals and keys, Mike Slammer (James Christian, Fiona, Steelhouse Lane, Seventh Key, City Boy) on guitars, Billy Greer on bass (Seventh Key, Khymera) and Tim Gehrt on drums (Joshua, Glenn Hughes, Europa) who both had seen success with bands in Tennessee and Atlanta. Here we have a strong album with some influences from Kansas style with harmony vocals, great riffs and melodies, memorable songwriting and for once more the amazing production of Beau Hill. The album starts with a classic AOR opener “Don’t Look Back” driven effortlessly

by great guitar riffs, catchy hooks and the harmony voice of Walsh followed up by the major “The Nightmare Begins”, a killer track having all that one could want in a rock song, features great hooks, crunching riff, hard hitting drums, soaring vocals with a huge refrain make it a great melody. “Broken Glass” is a highlight. A powerful ballad having great rock tune, nice keys, memorable chorus and nice guitar performance from Slamer. “Hit ‘n’ Run” is an average melodic rock song with a great guitar performance from Slamer but in my opinion is the only “weak” part in this album. Next we have the album’s title track “Crimes Of Mind” a straightforward rocker with a very catchy and remarkable chorus with Walsh, Gerht and Greer harmonizing brilliantly. The album regain’s it’s statue with “I Can’t Wait’ and “Gun Runner”.

“I Can’t Wait” has a terrific melody so catchy with an outstanding vocal performance from Walsh and a suberb songwriting make it a must listener track. “Gun Runner” continues in the same style, opening with an extremely and remarkable chorus, inflexible hook and dark lyrics that would stick in your head for a long time. Another great rock track is coming under the name “Rat Race” with Greer in lead vocals brings back some of the astriction with its forging bass and drums in frantic pace. “Diseree” is rather amusing with its easy-going melody and the sexual lyrics about having fun with a woman of questionable morals and “Turn My Head” brings the album to a hard rocking end with a great workout tune and some good riffs.

An outstanding album still fresh sounding after all these years with great production, song quality, perfect guitar playing thanks to Mike Slamer and an awesome vocal performance from Steve Walsh…………A MUST HAVE !!!!
