Free Spirit – All the Shades of Darkened Light [2014]

FREE_SPIRIT_ATSODLI have been a huge fan of Free Spirit since I first heard their debut album “Pale Sister Of Light”. So now five years have passed since that album and now the band return with a new one titled “All the Shades of Darkened Light”. The band has not lost its touch and still makes great music. This new album sounds similar to the first one, but not identical, which is a good thing – we don’t want the same record over and over again. It has a very strong 80’s rock feel to it, nice vocal harmonies, clean production, catchy melodies, and good keyboards and guitar work.

“All the Shades of Darkened Light” does seem, however, to be a small step down from “Pale Sister of Light” due to a few minor things: the songs are a bit more repetitive, the guitar solos are shorter and less creative, and the album has less of that somewhat “mysterious” feel than its predecessor. Also, not as many tracks are as “addictive” as the ones on the first album. New guitarist Vessa Yli-Maenpaa sounds great, as does Timo Alhi with his tasty keys in the mix throughout and the band in general sounds very good. Production is a notch or 2 up from the debut too, so all in all this is a highly recommended release that offers a lot and should please the majority of people who love this style of Melodic Rock.

From the opening song and its great bass line you can hear the quality of the songs that will follow. “Living Tattoo” is the first single of the album and one of the best tracks of the record with top notch guitar work and awesome singing vocals and the same goes to “Hysteria” the second single of the album, my personal anthem listening on daily basis you will travel to pure aor heaven. Great keys, ultra-catchy chorus, punchy guitar riffs and a melody that will explode you. If you want to rock hard and play the music loud (if you haven’t do it yet) just listen the powerful “The Dew Of The Rose”. The opening “grind” of the song will leave you speechless before explode to a hyper catchy chorus that you will singing along. The guitar riffs on this songs are simply amazing. “Burning Love” has that 80s feeling that we all love back these days. A song that will offer you successive adrenaline rush and will stuck in your head for a long time. “fever” is another winner with blasting guitar riffs and excellent soloing that worth to be mentioned. All the songs are outstanding even the slow ballad “Turn On The Night”.

Having said that – overall, I really enjoyed this album and will continue to listen to it for a long time. The music is great and I really hope it won’t take the Free Spirit fellas another five years to make the next record.
