Bad Sister – Heartbreaker [1989]

The German hard rock/AOR scene in 80s and 90s revealed many remarkable bands. One of them that deserves attention is the North German Rock outfit Bad Sister, started life as a pop rock outfit entitled Bogart Joint in the mid eighties. Bad Sister debuted commercially during 1989, donating the tracks “Running Wild” and “Cat On The Run” to a sampler compilation of North German Rock bands called “The Living Desert”.

The line up consists of Jorn Saul on bass and vocals, Kai-Ove Kessler on drums, Kai Beyer on keyboards who replaced the original keyboard player Werner Kaul, Sven Lange on guitars and Petra Degelow on vocals. The debut from this band features catchy, female fronted melodic hard rock/AOR with some poppy elements, catchy songs, lots of charming 80s cliché keyboards and a quite good production.

The two hits on the disc “Road To Nowhere” and “Catriona” are really excellent examples. Both starts with great majestic key intro having great guitar hooks and strong, powerful and catchy choruses you’ll definitely love. Of course there several songs that worth like the rocker “Big Brother” that opens the record, beyond the sparkling keyboards the guitar riffs are incredibly as well as the rhythm pace of the song. The only you have to do is to turn on the volume, open the windows and enjoy it. The power ballad “Desperate Heart’ is one more highlight with a great vocal performance from Degelow backed by pompous keys, ending to a fantasic chorus and the keyboard driven “Without You” that blends sparkling keyboard and guitar riffs and sounds so great and so 80s that it almost hurts, while the hard pop “For You” offers some very cool spacey keyboards and great guitar riffs that will satisfy the fans of this style. The industry rock “Raise It Up” sounds typical 80s with its slap bass and the electric drums, the rocker “Alligator”, the poppy “Hot Fun” and the sad ballad-like things “Russia On My Mind” closing the record leaving you fully satisfied with the whole effort.

The whole record is a very good and worthwhile effort with several stylish and catchy songs and especially recommended to fans of melodic rock/AOR with female vocals reminds me of bands like Vixen, Laos and Aurora.
