Profile Baltimore melodic Hard Rock act Child’s Play, founded in 1984, produced demos with Kim Fowley and Paul Lani behind the desk prior to landing an album deal with Chrysalis Records. Howard Benson produced the resulting ‘Rat Race’ album. Live promotion would include US gigs throughout October 1990 supporting Cold Sweat. Singer Brian Jack exited in 1991, striking out on his own with a mellow solo album ‘Promise Of Love’. Child’s Play persevered, bringing in new vocalist Tommy McRae and issuing the follow up ‘Long Way’ in 1993. Post Child’s Play, both bassist Idzi and drummer John Allen formed Starseed Speed.

Big hooks, huge melodies, a ‘fat’ production, a very good lead singer and some amazing guitar solos and riffs!  It reminds  a bit of Skid Row, Motley Crue and some heavier Bon Jovi. But the most impressive thing here is the guitar sound! The guitars have a tottaly big sound and some of the solos here are awesome!

What seems to distinguish Child’s Play from the rest of the early ’90s sleaze rock sound that was popular at the time is their technical prowess — especially the drummer John Allen (who later resurfaced in the more popular SR-71 and Charm City Devils), who reminded me of Vikki Foxx without the girly look. The other thing that makes this band stand out from the pack are their lyrics, which are really well written, ballsy, and handled perfectly by singer Brian Jack. Songs like “Rat Race”, “Evicted”, “When Hell Freezes Over” and “Capricorn/Bang Bang” (which starts with a killer drum solo) are really great rock tunes that could give Skid Row’s first album a run for its money.  A real blast from the past and a must have for the fans of Skid Row, Cinderella, Lynch Mob, Motley Crue and Xyz.
