PARIAH

Country USA

Style Glam/Hard Rock

Vocalist Dave Derrick, guitarists Kyle Ellison and Jared Tuten, bassist Sims Ellison and drummer Shandon Sahm (the son of Tex-Mex legend Doug Sahm, incidentally) met in high school in San Antonio and began playing together with various lineups. Eventually settling on the name Pariah (not to be confused with the English heavy metal band of the same time), their live show earned them a regional following but unfortunately they signed a very bad development deal with Geffen that almost caused this album to never be released. Pariah’s debut album, “To Mock a Killingbird”, was released in mid-1993, and produced by Tom Werman, features re-workings of four songs from the independently issued debut record.

Beyond this album the band released “Rattle Your Skull” a limited demo tape and “Make Believe” an independent release that distribution by Pariah’s Sick Kid Fan Club. Their sound is similar into the gutter-rockin’ lines of L.A. Guns, Jetboy, Britny Fox and to some extent Guns n’ Roses. They all Loved to play live but there was a lot of tension between the band members because they no longer sounded like the music on the record. They had gone more towards the sound of Pantera and harder metal by the time of the albumn release. Tragically, Sims Ellison would commit suicide two years later of their debut album, victim of depression. But the Sims Foundation was founded in his honor to provide health care to Austin area musicians.
