PROFILE

“Redemption” is the second album by Finnish hard rock singer Agnes Pihlava originally released in 2009. Her first claim to fame came through participating in the reality TV contest “Idols Finland 2”. Undoubtedly “Redemption” is a hard album to obtain at a reasonable price as Agnes’ albums have been mainly adressed to the domestic market and Japan.

Coming from a popular music contest, it is only logical that any rock fan would be sceptical of the musical direction of “Redemption”. At this point one has to assure that “Agnes-Redemption” is as powerful a piece of melodic hard rock as it gets. The entire album is performed by a totally heavy rocking band, solid guitar riffs, flamboyant solos, thick bass lines (even distorted at parts), dynamic drum attack and AOR-ish keyboards. Subsequently, not only are we looking at a hard rocking album but also one with an `80s orientation; for that matter the opening track “Own two Feet” has “Whitesnake 1987” written all over it, while “You believe her” kickstarts on a monster riff too reminiscent of “Deep Purple-Burn”. Having said that, there are minor elements of a more moder metal approach in “For your redemption” and “Maybe I was wrong” as both tracks open on extra heavy/groovy riffs while turing out to be equally melodic rockers. Other favorite tracks, beyond the ones mentioned above are “Seventeen” and “Ready to fall”.

Personally, one found the album to be a minor melodic hard rock gem referencing such favorites as “Whitesnake”, “Alyson Avenue”, “Issa” and “Shylock”. If you could find this release at a reasonable price, you could purchase without any hesitation. Another interesting point one could raise is the striking physical resemblance of Agnes Pihlava with that of Swedish “Nightwish” frontwoman Anette Olzon; the two look incredibly alile in both facial characteristics and statue.
